Dear reader, we at Verhuisbedrijf Direct know better than anyone that moving can be an exciting but also stressful undertaking. In addition to packing boxes and arranging a moving van, there is also a lot of paperwork involved. A question we often hear is: "Which agencies are automatically notified when moving?" Don't worry, we will take you through the entire process of reporting a change of address, from A to Z.
When should you report your move?
Let’s start with the timing. You need to report your move to your new municipality no later than five days after the big day. But don’t wait until the last minute! We recommend that you arrange this 4 weeks before your moving date. Why? Well, imagine sitting in your new home, surrounded by boxes, and then realising that you’ve missed an important letter. Not ideal, right?
"Early planning is half the battle," says our moving expert Petra. "It gives you breathing space and ensures that you don't risk a fine."
Yes, you read that right. Being late can result in a fine of up to €325. That is not a pleasant welcome gift in your new home!
How do you report your move to the municipality?
You have three options to report your change of address:
- Online: Often the fastest way. Go to the website of your new municipality and log in with your DigiD.
- Personal: Prefer face-to-face? Make an appointment at the town hall.
- Written: Some municipalities still accept a golden oldie letter.
What do you need?
- Your DigiD (for online tax return)
- Your new address (don't forget it!)
- The moving date
- Information about any co-movers (unfortunately the cat does not count)
The process is usually free, but please note that an extract from the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP) sometimes involves costs.
The magic of automated messaging
As soon as you report your move, the Personal Records Database (BRP) comes into action. Think of the BRP as the central nervous system of the Dutch government. It automatically sends signals to various government agencies to let them know that you have changed address.
Which authorities will automatically receive a message?
Now comes the moment you have been waiting for. Which agencies will automatically be notified of your move?
Government agencies
- Tax Authorities: They now know where to send your blue envelope.
- Social Insurance Bank (SVB): For your AOW or child benefit.
- UWV: Important if you receive benefits.
- DUO: Students, take note! Your student finance follows you.
- Chamber of Commerce: For the entrepreneurs among us.
- RDW: So that your car knows where it belongs.
Who should you inform yourself?
Unfortunately, not all agencies will automatically receive a signal. You will have to contact yourself:
- Your employer (unless you work from home, then they already know)
- Health insurer
- Bank
- Energy supplier
- Internet and telephone provider
- Associations and subscriptions
- Your GP and dentist (unless you hate going to the dentist)
PostNL's moving service: a handy extra?
PostNL offers a moving service on. It sounds great: they forward your mail and even inform some organizations for you. But is it worth it?
Advantages:
- Convenience: one central point for many changes
- Less chance of missed mail
Disadvantages:
- It costs money (€30.95 for 6 months, €51.95 for 12 months)
- After the service has ended, you will still need to take action yourself
Save money with these alternatives
Would you rather not spend money on a moving service? No problem! Here are some tips:
- Make a moving list and work through it systematically.
- Use free apps to keep track of your address changes.
- Combine automatic notifications with your own notifications.
And don't forget: friends and family are often willing to help with the move. A pizza and a few drinks can do wonders!
Special cases: what if...?
You are moving abroad
Dreaming of la dolce vita in Italy? Don't forget:
- Report your departure to your current municipality.
- Arrange all address changes yourself.
- Consider using an international forwarding service for your mail.
You are moving temporarily
Are you going away for less than 8 months? Then you don't have to do much:
- No notification to the municipality is required.
- Arrange a temporary forwarding service yourself.
- Inform important contacts.
You want to keep your data confidential
Sometimes you don't want everyone to know your new address. In that case:
- Request confidentiality from your municipality.
- You must inform all authorities yourself.
Finally
Moving can be overwhelming, but with the right preparation, it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Remember: many agencies will be notified automatically, but you are still responsible for informing other important contacts.
We from Moving company Directly wish you a smooth move. And remember: new adventures await in your new home. Enjoy!
